Guest blog post: A Video Interview Gig – NC Governor Jim Hunt:

I live in LA — but while home in NC for a visit I jumped at the opportunity to work with Fruition Film. I think it’s very important to work with different production houses (to branch out) because every shoot I’m on, I learn something new and meet new people – very important.

The shoot was for a Jim Hunt video — Tim McKay was the producer of the film.

Jim Hunt was the governor when I was a kid…throughout my time in elementary school and middle school. If there was a special state event, he was there. I remember him and my 4th grade class breaking the ground for a new NC Museum of Natural Sciences downtown. Our picture was on the front page of the News & Observer, our hometown newspaper. It was so cool to meet him years later! Sure we shook hands when I was 9, but still.

I’ve worked with Tim McKay on many shoots, so I pretty much knew the routine. I helped him organize Starbucks in the morning, lunch at a nice sandwich place, and some water bottles and granola bars throughout the day. Remember: Food is very important on a film set. Happy tummies equal a happy crew!

York Phelps, the director of photography and sound guy – was a “one-man show”. His job was to set up and run both functions.  I was pretty much a tag-along assisting in the production. One of my jobs was to keep things quiet so the producer wouldn’t have to worry about it. The woman at the front desk put a pillow over the phone so it wouldn’t be too loud when it rang. I ran to “shhh” people, which is pretty funny when I found out the person I “shhh’d” is a major player in the NC Democratic Party. Just doing my job!

My favorite quote of the day: I asked the woman at the front desk if there was wireless Internet. She said “No, because it wasn’t safe. The Republicans would sit on their front steps and hack into their Internet!” Ahhh you Republicans! Stop it!

Jim Hunt was incredibly nice and thanked me for setting up the shoot. Those political personalities — they know how to make you feel good! We mic’d him up, and I took a photo at the start of the interview. (See it above – that’s Jim Hunt talking with Tim)

It was so nice to work with such a great crew. It was small, but we got the job done. We were versatile and able to play many roles – something very important to have as a part of your skill set as you enter new productions!
